Daily Bible Verse ~ Proverbs 17:14

Pro 17:14 ESV The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so quit before the quarrel breaks out.

As I read through the Proverbs I am often struck by the way things are worded. Word pictures that tickle the mind will cause me to stop and ponder. There are so many opportunities in our lives to quarrel with others. Disagreements with co-workers, a snide comment from our spouse, or a rebellious child can be the source of much strife.

This Proverb today is so simple yet profound. Water flowing can not be contained. Once it comes pouring out of the source it is pretty much going to spill wherever it desires. Quarrels and strife are much the same. A small spark often turns into a large flame and then trying to contain it is very difficult. So what is the solution according to this Proverb? Simpleā€¦ Quit! Quit before the fire breaks out. When the water begins to flow, stop the argument. Simple wisdom that is so difficult to achieve sometimes.

Prayer: Lord, help me to not be quarrelsome with those around me. Your Word brings us wisdom so I ask that you fill me with your Holy Spirit so I can discern when to stop the flow of water and not allow a difficult situation or argument to occur. Thank you for your grace to come back from those times I have failed and the forgiveness you grant those who seek you. Amen
